After 30 minutes of volunteer work, I got fired. Apparently persons under 18 aren’t allowed to work anywhere washing cars because they could “slip and fall and hurt the company”. It makes sense. And getting fired after 30 minutes of volunteer work isn’t bad at all. Just a bit bored.

Huh. Washing cars is a tradional way for high school groups to make money. Not sure why the liability is higher for under eighteen.
Oh well, at least it doesn't mean a pay cut.

Well, if I slip and fall, it could hurt business.

Aren’t allowed to wash cars? I’m so confused.

If anything the younger would be better. If a person who’s 35 slips and falls, the recovery time will be much longer than if a 17 year old slips and falls.

Yeah, but I had a volunteer job. And I was dismissed from it. So, to be politically correct, I was fired. And I didn’t even cry.

If I slip and fall, it could hurt the business. But, I’m 15. I should be able to wash cars. Probably at a closer car wash.

I’m 15, and I have sturdy bones. Usually I just laugh when I fall.

The real question: why were you volunteer/working for an apparently for-profit business?

Washing cars isn’t something I’d consider one to be at the risk of slipping and falling.

This is no surprise. They probably realized that their insurance wouldn’t cover you since you weren’t a paid employee.

Doubt it had anything to do with the age. More likely insurance related. Non-employee status means workers-comp insurance won't cover; tasked with performing 'employee-like' activities means standard hazard insurance won't cover. If a claim was made it'd come out of cash. Or, more more likely, boss was like 'who the hell told the kid he could volunteer to wash cars?...that's a terrible idea, let him off nicely'.

I’d say you were let go. Being fired usually means you violated company policy or even broke the law, and it can make finding a new job a lot harder. You didn’t do anything wrong, though, so I don’t think it’s applicable here.

But what about when he’s on the hood using his boobs to rub soap on the windshield while the others spray him with the hose?

If you’re 15, I think the movie theater is one of the few places you could work at.

Look at it from their perspective. If you did something to get hurt, the first thing someone would ask is what you were doing there. Businesses carry two kinds of insurance, one that covers their employees, another that covers customers. There are also other policies, but these are the important ones.
If you get hurt, the first thing someone would ask is what you were doing there. When the business tries to file a claim to cover your injuries, the employee insurance wouldn’t cover you since you weren’t an employee and the customer insurance wouldn’t cover you since you weren’t shopping. Then they have to pay your medical bills out-of-pocket or risk being sued by you or your parents.

Unless it’s something like a bro truck, then you’re probably not going to fall off of anything either.
